Our Story
The idea of Pirogue & Co. came to us when we were visiting the island of Martha’s Vineyard on vacation in the summer of 2017. Martha’s Vineyard is known for its shopping, and among their local shops are a few brands that are distinct to the island. Brands like The Black Dog, Vineyard Vines, and Menemsha Blues are all a part of the tourism experience when you visit.
With this concept in mind, the thought of a brand inspired by our home Southern Louisiana popped into our minds. Both growing up less than an hour from New Orleans, we were always aware of the iconic tourist destination the Big Easy is. We wanted to create a brand that would not only speak to Louisiana natives, but tourists from far and wide!
The idea began with the name -- Pirogue & Co. A pirogue (pronounced “pee-row”) is a long narrow canoe made from a single tree trunk and has been a staple of Louisiana transportation for centuries. In fact, in 2012 the pirogue was named the official state boat of Louisiana! How fitting for a Louisiana-inspired brand?
Next came the brand icon. The question was what would we catch in a pirogue boat? A Louisiana Blue Crab, of course! Although this crustacean can be found along the North American coasts of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, it is most commonly found in Louisiana waters. The Louisiana Blue Crab is the star of any authentic Louisiana seafood dish from corn and crab bisque to seafood gumbo. When it came to logo creation, we knew the signature blue claws were the perfect way to differentiate our Louisiana-inspired mascot from just any old crab.
Our goal at Pirogue & Co. is to create a brand as rich in culture as the state it’s inspired by. With designs that represent important events like seafood season and Mardi Gras to apparel shades that showcase Southern Louisiana’s history, this brand is Louisianans and Louisiana lovers alike. Let the good times ‘rogue!
